Will This Float? 2008 Recap

The first ever Will This Float? event took place on November 20, 2008 at the Carnegie Hotel Ballroom in Johnson City, TN and by all accounts was a great success!  Congratulations to Eric McCarty and Fellowtip.com for taking home the prize, beating out the guys from Kitbook by only 1 vote!

John Denison came up from Asheville, NC to talk about Sticky Yard, a new innovative measuring solution that saves time, reduces costs, and helps professionals work smarter.

2. Tater Town

Tracy Fleenor, from Nashville, TN, spoke to the crowd about Tater Town.  Tater Town aims to invest in the regional economy by creatively simplifying local produce distribution.

3. Universal Wishlist

Jake Hathaway from Johnson City, TN (in full Santa attire!) spoke to us about his idea for a one-stop Universal Internet wishlist.

4. Kitbook

Ed Basconi and David Jones gave the crowd a look at their KitBook series of award-winning hands on science teaching tools and how they are taking aim at the DIY, hobby, and vocational skills training market.

5. FellowTip

Eric McCarty and FellowTip.com took home this years prize for showing that you can make your knowledge valuable on the internet.  FellowTip is a patent-pending internet Q&A/Forum where members can tip each other with real money as they help each other out.

The Judges

We would like to thank our three judges for this years event. Their comments and constructive criticism where helpful to all participants.

  • Dave Lawrence is the former executive director of the East Tennessee State University Innovation Lab in Johnson City, Tennessee. Lawrence retired in 2008 after serving his community for over 30 years.
  • Senitria Goodman is a lawyer with Hunter Smith & Davis LLP in Kingsport, Tennessee, practicing labor and employment law and corporate litigation. She has been recognized in the Tri-Cities as one of the up-and-coming leaders of the region.
  • Dr. Jon Smith is the director of the Bureau of Business & Economic Research in the College of Business and Technology at East Tennessee State University.

The Results
